Monocouche Render chosen for award-winning Hospital

The new building at Central Middlesex Hospital was handed over on Friday 17th March 2006 and the move to the new facility has already begun, bringing to a close a 10-year total site redevelopment for the 103 year old hospital.

In 1997, The Hospital Trust started work on the Acute and Critical Care Centre, and in 2002 received Government approval to build the second and final phase for the BECaD (Brent Emergency care and Diagnostic Centre) development.

The Bouygues Consortium was selected after 8 months of an intense bidding process where the quality of the Design and the FM proposal was fundamental to the final decision.

The contact for the supply and application of the rendering to the 13,000 sqm façade of the new facility was awarded to Monocouche UK Ltd of Thame, Oxfordshire one of the UK’s leading distributors of Monocouche render and projection plastering products.

Working in close consultation with Olivier Lageyre, the Façade and Envelope Engineer for Bouygues, Monocouche proposed the application of Moncouche, a through-coloured, one coat waterproofing and decorating mortar that facilitates very good machine flow, excellent texture and good surface hardness.

Commenting on the project, Olivier Lageyre said,

The quality and appearance of the exterior envelope of the building was critical to the overall aesthetic that the Design Team sought to create and the Monocouche product was fundamental to our being able to deliver it”

An endorsement of the quality of the buildings’ design and finish has been recognised by the Commission for Architecture in the Built Environment who gave the Trust an award for ‘ taking the lead in designing some of the foremost new health buildings in the country’ stating the ‘..BECaD shows a considered approach to all design decisions and the fairly rapid construction period creates a model for future health care environments’

Technical description

This new PFI project includes:

13,000m2 external façade – Monocouche Render

The construction of 30,000 m2 of new accommodation with 214 beds, including A&E, a Coronary Unit, 3 operating theatres

The provision installation and commissioning of all medical Equipment

The provision installation and commissioning of an IT network the maintenance and the Life Cycle of the new building and the existing Trust's estate
